Introducing our Newest Librarians…

FSU Libraries is proud to be growing our team, especially into new positions and service areas. Look for more posts in the future introducing more folks, as we have quite a few!

Learning Commons is our front-line librarians and staff, and is located on the first floor of Strozier Library. Serving primarily undergraduate students, Learning Commons is where you can check out a laptop, read the New York Times, meet a tutor, participate in a marathon reading of great and influential literature, or just grab a [Starbucks!] latte and hang out in the air conditioning! Emily Mann and Lindsey Wharton are both new librarians in the Learning Commons department, and introduce themselves and their roles below.

Emily

Emily is our Research and Information Services Librarian.

Hi Everyone! My name is Emily Mann and I’m happy to be the new research and information services librarian. Before coming to FSU, I worked as a reference and instruction librarian at several other colleges, and also as an online librarian for libraries around the country. I was born in Pennsylvania, raised in Chapel Hill, NC and am excited to be here in Florida! I love traveling, cute things, doing crafts and spending time with my husband, toy poodle and cat.

What is a reference and instruction librarian you say? Super question! I’m here to help students and patrons find the best resources for their research, and to train library staff and student workers to give the best reference services possible. I also look forward to connecting with the iSchool at FSU (library master’s degree program) and working with the students there to build a reference training program. My research interests focus mainly on helping underserved populations to know and use the library, including especially international students, veterans, and first-generation students among others.

Lindsey

Lindsey is the Extended Campus and Distance Services Librarian.

As the Extended Campus and Distance Services Librarian, I focus on providing equitable access to all that the library offers for distance learning students and faculty, as well as Noles at at our International Programs. Originally from Tallahassee, I received my B.A. in Philosophy from FSU in 2009 and my M.A. in Library and Information Science from the University of South Florida in 2012. For the last few years I worked as the Assistant Director of the Learning Resource Center at Florida Keys Community College in Key West.

As more students attend college through hybrid and online programs, libraries are rethinking how we provide our services. It’s an exciting time to be a new librarian! I get to look forward and act for the future. What do distance learning students and faculty want? What will they want in five years, ten years? Information is no longer held just in the physical library; its available globally and at your fingertips instantaneously.

There are a lot of challenges that come along with being a distance learning student and my responsibility is to make sure that connecting with the library is as easy as can be. I get to collaborate with colleagues around the university (like the Office of Distance Learning) to blend library services into a seamless academic experience. I feel so lucky for the opportunity to enhance our distance learning unit and better support students and faculty in the Florida State University community.
