FSU Libraries’ Involvement in Shakespeare Studies

Esteemed Professor of English, Dr. Gary Taylor’s newest book, Elements in Shakespeare and Text: Textual Genealogies and Shakespeare’s History Plays, analyzes spoken genealogies in Shakespeare’s Henry V and Henry VI, Part Two. Written alongside Dr. Taylor’s former student, Dr. John Nance, Elements in Shakespeare and Text is the product of meticulous research and collaboration, and not just between the co-authors.

Dr. Taylor’s work was assisted by FSU Libraries, which not only offered services in the form of Digital Humanities Librarian, Dr. Aaron Rodriguez, but also assisted in making Elements in Shakespeare and Text freely available through Open Access, thanks to the Open Access fund available to both faculty and graduate students. Presently, Dr. Taylor’s and Dr. Nance’s work can be found online through Cambridge University Press, the publishers of Elements in Shakespeare and Text.

Dr. Aaron Rodriguez, Director of Digital Research and Scholarship at FSU Libraries, and once a student of Dr. Taylor himself was instrumental in the completion of Dr. Taylor and Dr. Nance’s book and thanked in the ‘Acknowledgements’ section as a result. As a Digital Humanities Librarian, Aaron offered his services, creating the eight stemmata codicum, family tree diagrams that map the genealogical relationships between manuscripts of a text used in Elements of Shakespeare and Text.

Additionally, FSU Libraries collaborated with Dr. Taylor via GEOSET (Global Educational Outreach for Science, Engineering, and Technology) to produce a video abstract. As a division of FSU Libraries, GEOSET at Florida State University carries forward with its founder, Sir Harry’s vision by supporting academic communications and offering media production services to the FSU community. Dr. Taylor is just one of many faculty supported by the services of GEOSET, and by extension, FSU Libraries.
