Mark and Nan Hillis Donate Generous Gift to the Libraries in Honor of Retired Dean, Gale Etschmaier

In honor of Dean Gale Etschmaier’s retirement, Mark and Nan Hillis have generously established a $54,000 fund to support Special Collections and Archives at FSU Libraries, with full funding anticipated within the next three years. This gift reflects their enduring dedication to preserving history and advancing the mission of FSU Libraries. Their decision to make this gift public is rooted in their hope to inspire others to support the preservation of FSU’s rich academic and cultural heritage.

Mark, a 1964 graduate of the College of Business and a retired U.S. Marine Corps major, serves on the FSU Libraries Advancement Advisory Board. Nan, a 1976 alumna, serves on the Heritage Museum Development Council. Both have held leadership roles across several university initiatives. Together, they have established multiple endowed scholarships and a professorship, and have contributed to several major university projects. Their generosity and leadership have helped shape transformative opportunities for students, faculty, and the broader FSU community.

“I am deeply honored by Mark and Nan’s generous gift in recognition of my retirement,” said Dean Gale Etschmaier. “Their unwavering support of FSU Libraries and commitment to preserving our shared history is truly inspiring. This fund will have a lasting impact on our Special Collections and Archives, and I am profoundly grateful for their vision and generosity.”
