New Art Exhibition at Strozier Library: Opening Minds through Art

On January 29th, Art in the Library, in collaboration with Opening Minds through Art (OMA), unveiled a new art exhibition in Strozier Library featuring artwork done by people living with dementia. OMA’s program partners undergraduate students with dementia patients, the two working together to produce lovely pieces of art, with the patients’ creativity and specific artistic pursuit taking center stage.

The focus of the patients’ art is on positive emotions, something which the exhibition accentuates to the fullest. One cannot help but feel a sense of love and care when looking at these beautifully crafted pieces, especially when taking the time to read the informational posters which discuss the origins and value of OMA. The titles alone are enough to make one emotional, but the opening event, courtesy of Art in the Library, drove home just how special an occasion this was.

Art in the Library organized a lovely spread of sweet and savory food for patrons of the exhibit. There was gentle music playing from a hidden speaker, soft enough so as not to disturb the students, but loud enough to graciously enhance the viewing experience. It was clear from the moment of entering to the moment of exiting that this was nothing short of a labor of love; not just a love for art or for the Libraries but love for the Tallahassee community.

Of course, the exhibition was only as successful as it was thanks to the efforts of FSU Libraries’ staff, namely librarians Leah Sherman, Crystal Matthews, Graphic Design Specialist, Laura Pellini, and Digital Library Center Metadata Associate, Dianna Bradley, representing Art in the Library. Additionally, the facilitator behind the students, Suzanne Monroe Smith, deserves to be credited as well as the sponsor of the event and Dean of University Libraries, Gale Etschmaier.

FSU Libraries welcomes anyone to stop by the third floor of Strozier and check out the gallery. It’s truly something special that you just have to see with your own eyes. The effort, passion, and love are visible on every art piece. Overall, it’s an exciting addition to the Libraries, and one that everyone should see for themselves.
