SPARC Executive Director Speaking at FSU Libraries for Open Access Week

Heather Joseph, Executive Director of Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources (or SPARC) is coming to speak at FSU Libraries for Open Access Week. Open Access Week is an annual event organized by SPARC, a non-profit advocacy organization, dedicated to perpetuating the free open access of scholarly materials to those who wish to view them. Every year, Open Access Week has a particular theme which highlights an aspect of the Open Access movement. 2024’s theme is a continuation of last year’s, “Community over Commercialization,” which emphasizes using scholarship in ways that benefit the academic community. Graduate students and faculty are all encouraged to attend.

Heather Joseph has been the Executive Director of SPARC since 2005 and has been involved in a myriad of advocacy efforts. “She has led SPARC in their advocacy for global awareness and the development of infrastructure for open knowledge sharing,” writes Kassidy Hof-Mahoney, Open Science Librarian and an organizer of the event. “She has also collaborated with international organizations, including the United Nations, and played a pivotal role in SPARC’s efforts to influence public policy resulting in the issuance of the White House Memorandum mandating open access to all U.S. federally funded research outputs by 2025,” Hof-Mahoney says.

The lecture will be on advocacy for knowledge sharing and influencing public policy at Robert Manning Strozier Library in the Bradley Reading Room. It will be held on October 18, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Food and drink will be provided at the event.

Faculty and graduate students can order their tickets at calendar.fsu.edu.
