Welcome to a New Academic Year at FSU Libraries  

The start of the fall semester is always a special time on campus. We are delighted to welcome new and returning students as well as all new staff and faculty members to FSU!  We are also deeply grateful to our returning colleagues whose work continually enriches our university community.

Emmett Till Lecture at The Claude-Pepper Center  

Building on the recent acquisition of rare legal documents related to the Emmett Till case, FSU Libraries invites the campus and community to attend the Emmett Till Lecture Series on September 17, 2026, in the Broad Auditorium at the Claude Pepper Center at FSU. 

The event will feature Patrick Weems, Executive Director of the Emmett Till Interpretive Center, and Gloria Dickerson, Executive Director of W2gether and a longtime civil rights activist. Together, they will explore the legacy of Emmett Till, the importance of preserving civil rights history, and the power of community engagement in advancing understanding and social change. 

As Executive Director of the Emmett Till Interpretive Center in Sumner, Mississippi, Weems has helped lead national efforts to preserve and interpret the history of Emmett Till’s life and legacy. Through educational programming, historical preservation initiatives, and community partnerships, he works to ensure that this pivotal story in American history continues to inspire learning, reflection, and meaningful dialogue. 

Dickerson brings decades of experience as a civil rights advocate, community leader, and educator. Through her leadership of W2gether and her longstanding commitment to equity, civic engagement, and social justice, she has helped create opportunities for communities to engage in important conversations about race, history, and reconciliation. 

The Emmett Till Lecture Series offers a unique opportunity to connect historical records with contemporary perspectives and to engage with leaders dedicated to ensuring that the lessons of the past remain relevant for future generations. 

The reception starts at 5:15 PM in the Claude Pepper Museum, followed by the lecture at 6:00 PM. Please RSVP and join us for snacks and conversation before the presentation begins! 

Hemingway Studies in Japan: Librarian Editors 

A new edited volume, Hemingway Studies in Japan, provides insight into decades of Japanese scholarship on Ernest Hemingway, further expanding English-speaking audiences’ access to the long-standing tradition of Japanese literary criticism on one of America’s most iconic authors.

This open-access collection, published by Florida State Open Publishing (FSOP), brings together the work of sixteen leading Japanese scholars on Hemingway’s work and cultural reception.  

Among the editors are FSU Libraries very own Dr. Aaron Rodriguez, Director of Digital Humanities, and Dr. Landis Grenville, Digital Humanities Librarian. By translating this scholarly work into English and publishing a freely available digital edition, the editorial team hopes to make a significant contribution to global Hemingway studies.

GEOSET Produces Video Abstract for Dr. Gary Taylor 

GEOSET (Global Educational Outreach for Science, Engineering, and Technology) was founded in 2006 by Nobel Laureate Sir Harold Kroto to provide media creation and hosting resources to educators and students worldwide. Now a division of FSU Libraries, GEOSET at Florida State University carries forward Sir Harry’s vision by supporting academic communications and offering media production services to the FSU community. 

Recently, GEOSET Head Kyle Wilson collaborated with Dr. Gary Taylor, Professor of English, to produce a video abstract for his new book from Cambridge University Press, Elements in Shakespeare and Text: Textual Genealogies and Shakespeare’s History Plays. The book reconsiders the historical, theoretical, racial, ableist, and editorial aspects of genealogy by analyzing spoken genealogies in Shakespeare’s Henry V and Henry VI, Part Two.

New Read & Publish Agreements at FSU Libraries

FSU Libraries is pleased to announce new transformative Read & Publish agreements with Springer Nature and ACM publishers. These agreements enable eligible FSU authors to publish open access articles in participating journals without paying article processing charges (APCs).  These new partnerships complement our existing agreements, bringing the total number of publishers in the Libraries’ Read and Publish program to 10. 

Because the number of APC-funded articles available through some agreements is limited, authors are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities early. APC waivers will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. Visit the Libraries’ Open Access Support website for participating publishers, eligibility information, and additional information.

Upcoming Events 

Innovation Book Club (9/21, 10/19, and 11/16)

Join FSU Libraries and the Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship for the inaugural Innovation Book Club! We’re diving into Kara Swisher’s Burn Book: A Tech Love Story, an explosive insider look at Silicon Valley’s tech giants. Meet us at the InNolevation Center to discuss the book and enjoy free pizza and drinks. Faculty, staff, and students are all welcome! 

Coffee & Questions with Your Librarian (9/3, 10/1, 11/5, and 12/3) 

Join us on the first floor of Strozier Library, from 1pm-4pm, on the first Thursday of every month for Coffee & Questions with Your Librarian.  Enjoy a nice cup of coffee and get all of your questions answered on the spot!
