Jake Tompkins graduated from FSU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Actuarial Science in 2018. During his time at FSU, he worked at the Libraries in Assessment as a Student Data Analyst. His time at the Libraries marked the first research project he had spearheaded himself and gave him valuable experience and confidence, which would aid him in his future academic and professional endeavors. After leaving the Libraries, Jake enrolled at UCLA’s Master of Library & Information Science program, which he graduated from in 2021. While at UCLA, Jake received an internship with the United Nations as a graphic designer and data visualiser, working with the Strategic Workforce Planning Section of the Office of Human Resources. Currently, Jake works as an Information Designer at the Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley.
Jake’s time working at FSU Libraries taught him that he, as someone with a passion for mathematics, had a place in contributing to the functionality of a library. The Libraries ingrained in him an appreciation for the moving parts behind the scenes. Coinciding with this sentiment, Jake encourages STEM students specifically to seek out the Libraries, as he feels it’s usually those in the arts and humanities who identify with the resources libraries offer. In his experience, there is something for everyone at the Libraries.
