Rafael Gonzalez graduated from FSU in 2013 with a dual bachelor’s degree in Psychology and International Affairs (with a focus in religion). At FSU Libraries, he was a research assistant working in assessment where he studied the study habits of STEM and graduate students. In addition to finding this research fascinating, Rafael enjoyed the quiet, studious atmosphere of the Libraries. He also credits his time at the Libraries with teaching him skills which have benefitted him throughout his career, namely how to conduct qualitative research. His advice for any future student employees of the Libraries is to take the time to note how things work at a higher education institution, as depending on their career trajectories, may prove to be a huge advantage.
Currently, Rafael works for the University of Florida’s College of Pharmacy as the Graduate Education Admissions Coordinator. After leaving FSU, Rafael moved to Fort Myers where he worked as a Financial Specialist while pursuing his MBA at Florida Gulf Coast University. In 2018, he received his MBA and moved on to becoming an Assistant Bursar at Florida Southwestern State College. Rafael is also a Doctor of Education, having received his terminal degree from UF’s College of Education in 2024. His career has been defined by an unexpected love for higher education, a love that was firmly established in large part due to his time working at the Libraries.
